Cash Flow Management: Strategies to Keep Your Business Fundable

Lenders look at your last 3–6 months of bank statements above everything else. Here is how to manage cash flow so those statements always tell a strong story.

Lenders look at your business bank statements more closely than almost any other document in your file. The last 3–6 months of deposits and withdrawals paint a detailed picture of your revenue consistency, cash management habits, and financial health. Here is how to make sure that picture tells a compelling story.

What Lenders Are Looking For in Bank Statements

  • Consistent average daily balance — not constantly near zero
  • Regular, predictable deposit patterns (not lumpy or irregular)
  • No non-sufficient funds (NSF) or overdraft fees — these are major red flags
  • Low number of returned ACH payments
  • No large unexplained deposits or withdrawals in the 90 days before applying

Building a Strong Statement History

If your statements have been messy, the good news is that 90 days of clean behavior can meaningfully reset a lender's impression. Start now: eliminate overdrafts, build a minimum cushion of one month's operating expenses, and stop making large round-number personal withdrawals that look like owner distributions.

Timing Your Application

If your business has seasonal revenue spikes, time your loan application to coincide with or immediately follow your strongest months. A statement file showing 3 months of peak-season deposits will dramatically strengthen your application compared to applying during a slow quarter.

Pro Move: Maintain a minimum average daily balance of at least 10% of your requested loan amount in the 90 days before applying. This signals to lenders that you are not desperate — you are strategic.
